Christmas fairs originated in Austria and Germany and began to be organized in the 13th century. In Vienna, for example, they have been organized since 1294, and in Frankfurt, Germany, they first appeared in 1300.
We take a look at some of the most magical Christmas markets in Romania this December, with Transylvania leading the way. Firmly signaling the arrival of the festive season, here are some of the best places to find holiday treats, sweets, gifts, crafts and festivities during the holidays.
Sibiu Christmas Market
The Christmas Market in the Saxon city of Sibiu is one of the most beautiful and famous in the country, following old Saxon traditions and resembling the "sister" markets in Germany. The Sibiu Christmas Fair is a cultural project initiated by the Austrian Embassy in Romania in partnership with the Sibiu municipality. Opened for the first time in 2007, the year when Sibiu was elected to serve as European Cultural Capital, the Christmas Fair has become a tradition and is known today throughout the country and the continent. And Santa’s Workshop is waiting for kids to take part in thematic workshops!
Bucharest Xmas Market
Already established as one of the largest Xmas Markets in Romania, the Bucharest Christmas market brings together a varied gastronomic offer with many specific Romanian products, a crafts fair and traditional products sold in more than 100 Xmas houses, music and dance performances from Romanian folklore, concerts, as well as interactive activities for the whole family: outdoor skating, carousel riding, creative workshops and of course, Santa's House.
